The waitlist

When you join, we keep your email address, the product you signed up for, the page you were on, the date, and your country (Cloudflare tells us that from your connection). If you came by a link with a tag on it (like ?ref=podcast, so we know which mention brought you), we keep that tag too. If you answer “which would you pick” on the form, we keep the wood and screen you chose, to decide what to make first. Your IP address isn't saved with it.

We use it to send you one email when reservations open. We don't sell it or add you to anything else.

Two services see it, only to do that job. When you join, we get a message in our team chat on Discord with those details, so we see signups as they come in. If we use an email service to send the launch email, it gets your address only to deliver it.

The site

No ads, no trackers, and no cookies of ours unless you sign in. The site runs on Cloudflare, which keeps short-lived server logs (including IP addresses) to deliver pages and stop attacks.

If you arrive by a link with a tag on it, your browser keeps the tag for 30 days in this site’s storage, and it’s sent only with a waitlist signup. Clearing this site’s data removes it.

To see which pages get read, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookies and keeps nothing that identifies you. It notes the page, the site that sent you, your country, your browser and type of device, and how fast the page loaded, and shows us only totals. We don't track you across other sites, so Do Not Track signals change nothing here.

Your Komado account

You can sign in with Shop, Apple or Google, whichever are switched on. Signing in makes your Komado account: your email and name, and for each way you sign in, that service's ID for you and the email it gave us, with when you added it. Nothing else from them. From Google we ask only for your basic profile (your name and email), never your mail, files, contacts or anything else in your Google account. From Apple we get your name only if you share it, and the email you choose: if you hide yours, Apple's relay address. Without a name, we use the part of your email before the @ as your name. When two ways to sign in give us the same verified email, they open the same account. You can add or remove ways to sign in on your account page, as long as one is left.

We also keep a list of the browsers you're signed in on (like "Safari on iPhone", with when you signed in, how, and last visited). Each browser gets one cookie on this site, a random key to that list. Signing out ends it, and your account page can sign out your other browsers. If you add a Komado device to your account, we note that it's yours; it reports its battery level and software version when it updates, and your account page shows those with its settings and when it last checked in.

Setting up a device in the app

When the Komado app sets up a device over Bluetooth, it keeps a log of the steps on your phone (the last three setups). It sends one to us only when you tap "Send details to Komado", after a setup that didn't work or on the app's account screen. A log holds each step and how long it took, Bluetooth's errors, the device's name and software version, the name of the Wi-Fi network you picked (never its password, or the code on the device's screen), your phone's model and system version, and the app's version. We keep each one with your account for 30 days, to work out what went wrong.

Once a device has joined your Wi-Fi, the app also saves that network's name and password on your phone (in the iPhone's Keychain, or encrypted with a key that stays on your Android phone; at most ten networks), so the next device you set up has it filled in. They never leave your phone and never reach us. "Forget", under the password, removes one, and a saved password that stops working is removed by itself.

Home: your trains and shipments

If Home is on for your account (it's being tried with a few people first), we keep the train stations you follow: the station, the lines and the direction you picked. Train times come from the MTA's public feeds; nothing about you is sent to the MTA.

For each shipment we keep only what it takes to follow it: the sender's name, the names of the items, the carrier, the tracking and order numbers, its status and steps (with a few words from the carrier, like "left in the mail room"), the expected date, and when it was updated. They go 14 days after delivery, or when you remove them.

We never read your mailbox. If you forward shipping emails to your own Komado address (it starts witht-, and only you have it), each email is read for those details and then thrown away: we don't keep the email, its subject, the sender's address or anyone else's address in it. For your address we keep its code, how many emails came that day and when the last one did, and for an hour, the confirmation code Gmail sends when you set up forwarding, so your account page can show it to you.

For orders from Komado, Shopify tells us when your order ships, with its tracking. We keep that with the order's email address, and show it to whoever signs in with that same address, once Shop, Apple or Google has confirmed the address is theirs.
